Visitors to MACH 2026 will be able to see the full capabilities of modern multi-tasking machining brought to life on NCMT stand (19-130), as the Okuma MULTUS U3000 2SW 1500 produces intricately machined Daruma dolls live throughout the exhibition.
The choice of the Daruma Doll is rich in symbolism and is regarded as a talisman of good luck to the Japanese. It also highlights the longstanding ties between the UK manufacturing technology provider and the Japanese machine tools powerhouse; a relationship built on engineering excellence.
Rather than a simple demonstration piece, the Daruma has been selected for the complexity of its geometry and the breadth of processes required to complete it. The component is machined from aluminium and combines turning, drilling, 5-axis milling and friction stir welding within a single, fully integrated process.
Production begins with manually loading the bar and pulling it using the sub spindle. This is followed by rough and finish turning of the lower half using high efficiency insert tooling. From there, the machine’s twin-spindle configuration enables simultaneous machining of both halves of the component, significantly reducing cycle time while maintaining alignment and accuracy.
Internal machining operations are then carried out, including drilling and precision ID milling at speeds of up to 12,000 rpm. The joint faces are prepared through controlled turning operations before the two halves are permanently joined using friction stir welding a process that highlights the machine’s ability to integrate advanced manufacturing techniques beyond conventional cutting.

Following welding, the lower section is re-machined to achieve final dimensional accuracy, before detailed engraving of the Daruma’s facial features is completed using 5-axis milling. The component is then parted off the bar and undergoes final outside turning to achieve the required surface finish and form.
Jonathan Smart, Managing Director of NCMT, said: “The Daruma doll is a fitting way to demonstrate the capability of the MULTUS U3000 2SW 1500. It allows us to showcase complex turning and 5-axis milling in a single process and a whole host of other intricate processes, giving visitors a clear view of what the machine can deliver in a real-world application.”
“It also carries an added significance symbolising good fortune which is something we are pleased to share with our customers old and new.”
This sequence demonstrates the full versatility of the MULTUS U3000 2SW 1500, combining multiple processes in a single set-up to eliminate rehandling, improve accuracy and reduce overall production time. Okuma’s Thermo-Friendly Concept ensures consistent dimensional stability throughout, from cold start to extended running.
